Privacy Policy

This policy covers the Expectancy app for iPhone and iPad and this website, expectancy.app. Both are made by Serious Business Software LLC (“we”, “us”). The short version: the app has no account, no server of its own, and no analytics or tracking. Your answers and any Apple Health data stay on your device. The only thing that ever leaves the app is a message you choose to send us through Send feedback.

What stays on your device

Everything you tell Expectancy is stored only in the app’s private storage on your iPhone or iPad. That includes:

  • your answers to the questionnaire, such as date of birth, sex at birth, country, height, weight, habits, diagnoses and family history
  • the history of your estimate over time, used for the chart on the Today screen
  • any goal you set
  • display preferences, such as units

The entire model ships inside the app: the WHO life tables, every hazard ratio, the diet model and the disease equations. Your estimate is calculated by code running on your own device, and the app makes no network requests while calculating. We have no server that receives your answers, and no copy of them exists anywhere we can reach. Nothing syncs between your devices, because nothing leaves any of them.

If you back up your iPhone or iPad with iCloud Backup or to a computer, Apple includes the app’s data in that backup the same way it does for every other app. That backup belongs to your Apple Account and is covered by Apple’s privacy policy. We cannot see or access it.

Apple Health

Connecting Apple Health is optional. Every value can be typed in by hand instead.

If you connect it, Expectancy asks only for permission to read, never to write. It asks for these types, each because a named factor in the model uses it: height, weight, waist circumference, body mass index, blood pressure, resting heart rate, heart rate variability, cardio fitness (VO2 max), steps, exercise minutes, sleep, date of birth and biological sex. Nothing read from Health is applied until you have seen the value and chosen to accept it.

Health data read by Expectancy:

  • never leaves your device, and is never sent to us or to anyone else
  • is never used for advertising, marketing or data mining, and is never sold, rented or shared with any third party
  • is never stored in iCloud by the app
  • is used only to calculate your estimate and the charts you see in the app

You can change or withdraw the app’s Health access at any time in the iPhone or iPad Settings app, under Privacy and Security, then Health.

Send feedback: the one thing that can leave

Settings has a Send feedback button. If you use it, and only when you press send, the app sends the following to our support system at api.heardkit.com:

  • the message you typed
  • the category you picked, if any (general, bug report, feature request or other)
  • your email address, only if you chose to type one in (it is optional)
  • the app name and version number
  • the operating system name and version, for example “iOS 26.0”
  • the time the message was sent

That is the complete list. The app never attaches your questionnaire answers, your estimate, or any Health data to feedback. Anything personal that ends up in a feedback message is only there because you typed it.

Feedback is received by a support system we operate on Cloudflare, and a person reads it and replies. Like any web request, the connection that delivers it exposes your IP address to that infrastructure; we do not use it to identify you. We use feedback only to answer you and to fix and improve the app, and we never sell it or use it for advertising. If you would like a feedback message and any reply deleted, email us and we will delete it.

If you email us instead, we receive whatever you put in the email, plus your email address, and use it the same way. The same goes for the contact form on this website, described below.

Purchases

The one-off unlock and the weekly subscription are sold and processed by Apple through the App Store. Apple handles your payment details and your Apple Account; we never see them. The app asks Apple’s StoreKit on your device which purchases you own, so that it can unlock the paid features. We receive only the anonymous sales reports Apple gives every developer, which do not identify you.

Notifications

If you start the free trial and allow notifications, the app schedules two reminders on your device, three days and one day before the trial turns into a paid subscription. They are local notifications created and fired by your iPhone or iPad. Nothing is registered with a server, and no push notification service is involved.

No analytics, no tracking, no advertising

The app contains no analytics, crash reporting, advertising or tracking code, and no third-party SDKs. The feedback form described above is our own code. It does not use the advertising identifier, does not track you across other companies’ apps or websites, and contains no ads.

When you tap a link in the app, such as a study’s DOI or the App Store’s subscription page, it opens in your browser or the App Store, and those services’ own privacy policies apply.

This website

expectancy.app is hosted on Cloudflare. It uses Abner, a cookieless analytics tool, to count page views. It sets no cookies and does not track individual visitors across sites. The website has no accounts, and it does not receive any data from the app. Like any web host, Cloudflare processes your IP address to deliver pages and protect the site from abuse.

The support page has a contact form. When you send it, the site passes the topic you picked, your message, and your email address if you typed one to the same support system that receives Send feedback, and it is handled exactly as described above. The form is protected from spam by Cloudflare Turnstile, which runs a check in your browser and may process your IP address and browser details to do it; it does not set advertising cookies or track you across sites. Nothing is sent until you press Send.

Getting your data out, and deleting it

  • Export: Settings has an Export button that writes everything the app knows about you to a JSON file you keep. Where that file goes is up to you.
  • Erase: Settings has an Erase everything button. It deletes your answers, your estimate history and your goal from the device, rather than marking them deleted. It cannot be undone.
  • Delete the app: removing Expectancy from your device removes its data with it.
  • Health access: revoke it in Settings, Privacy and Security, Health.
  • Feedback you sent: email us and we will delete it.

Because we never receive your answers or your Health data, there is nothing about them for us to delete on our side, and nothing we could hand over to anyone who asked.

Children

Expectancy is not directed at children and we do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 13. Because the app sends nothing without you choosing to send feedback, the only way we could receive a child’s information is through a feedback message. If you believe that has happened, email us and we will delete it.

Your rights

Depending on where you live, you may have rights to access, correct, delete or object to the processing of personal information we hold about you. In practice the only personal information we can hold is feedback or email you have sent us. To use any of these rights, email us.

Changes to this policy

If this policy changes, the new version will be posted on this page with a new effective date.
